Phase 1 → 2 → 3, and what a 'readout' actually is.

Drugs advance through staged human trials. Each stage answers a bigger question and raises the stakes.

Phase 1 — safety and dosing in a small group; rarely a major catalyst on its own.
Phase 2 — does it work? First real efficacy signal, in a few hundred patients.
Phase 3 — large, pivotal, confirmatory trials that support approval. The highest-stakes readouts.

What is a readout?

A 'readout' is the release of topline results. The primary completion date (the metric we track) is roughly when results are expected, though the market-moving announcement can come weeks later.

Endpoints decide the move

A trial 'hits' if it meets its primary endpoint with statistical significance. Missing the endpoint — or hitting it but with weak magnitude — can sink the stock even if the drug 'works'.
